Gregg Heacock taught English for over 30 years in Los Angeles
County, mostly in inner-city schools, where he developed educational
materials designed to assess and address each student’s skills and
needs. After teaching high school and night school, he was asked to
teach an “Even Start” Family Literacy class to help Spanish-speaking
families develop the skills needed to support their children’s
academic growth. Co-host and co-producer of the award-winner
KPFK-Pacifica Radio program “Catch-222: Growing up in L.A.
Schools,” he interviewed Paulo Freire, fellow teacher Jamie
Escalante, and others working to improve education here and abroad.
Now, retired in Bend, Oregon, he serves on the Oregon Battle of the
Books High School Title Selection Committee and is developing a
website—The Logical Connection—to share innovative approaches
to literacy with other English teachers across the country.
