Recent spots from CA candidates Andrew Janz, Ammar Campa-Najjar, Harley Rouda & Mike Levin show Democrats’ willingness – and even eagerness – to call out corruption.
Conspiracies. Cover-ups. Campaign finance fraud. Ponzi schemes.
This election year may turn on Democrats’ ability to expose GOP corruption and cast themselves as the sane and principled party that is ready to bring ethics back to DC.
There’s certainly plenty of material for them to work with.
California in particular has a crop of high-profile, vulnerable Republicans engaged in rampant self-sabotage. And their Democratic challengers are taking full advantage on the stump, as well as digitally. Here are some recent ads put together by California Democrats, targeting GOP corruption:
1. Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar vs. GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter (CA-50)
Just last week, Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter was indicted on allegations that he flagrantly broke campaign finance laws, using donations to take trips, buy clothing, and pay dental bills. His challenger in CA-50, Ammar Campa-Najjar, just released a video calling Hunter out:
2. Democrat Andrew Janz vs. GOP Rep. Devin Nunes (CA-22)
Devin Nunes, as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has inexplicably killed the Russia investigation in the House, and spread disinformation about Federal law enforcement to protect the president. When he released his famous “Nunes Memo” earlier in 2018, his opponent in CA-22 – Andrew Janz – didn’t pull any punches:
3. Democrat Harley Rouda vs. GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48)
Dana Rohrabacher (commonly referred to as “Putin’s Favorite Congresssman”) has so many demonstrated ties to Putin’s Russia that he is worthy of a Kremlin code name. But it isn’t his ties to the Kremlin, to Julian Assange/Wikileaks, or to disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn that are featured in this new spot from his Democratic opponent in CA-48, Harley Rouda. It is his monetary ties to Big Pharma:
4. Democrat Mike Levin vs. Republican Diane Harkey (CA-49)
In the lengthiest and most emotionally fraught video of the batch, CA-49 hopeful Mike Levin‘s campaign has put out a blistering, 9-minute video about his Republican opponent Diane Harkey, who earlier in her career served as Secretary at Point Center Financial – a company run by her husband that has been accused of running a Ponzi scheme that swindled hard working Americans out of their retirement funds. The video asks to what extent Harkey’s political career – on which she has spent roughly $1.5 million – has been made possible via fraud:
