Background
Georgia GOP knows the power of the black vote. Despite our modern era, Jim Crow tactics are alive and well. With Stacey Abrams poised to become the first African American governor, not to mention Joyce Barlow readily poised to flip GA State Representative District 151, Republican-held Randolph County has decided to close 7 poll locations.
Their claim is that these locations do not meet ADA compliance, but the county has been able to show no documentation of any analysis done backing up such a claim. In reality, closing these polling locations would have a decidedly partisan result. Randolph County is 61 percent black and has voted Democratic in the last 3 Presidential elections.
As a poorer county, residents have no public transportation and many living below the poverty line don’t own a vehicle. Closing the polls will severely suppress voter turnout.
Local organizations are fighting back, but there is little time. The County Elections Board will make their decision on Friday, August 24, which means the citizens have until Thursday night to obtain signatures opposing the closure of the polls by 20% of Randolph County.
Every vote matters in every election. Suppressing the votes of minorities is a strategy the GOP has been relying on for decades. It only ends if we demand it does.
